Prentys Tully

Fire & Blood

Prentys Tully, Lord of Riverrun, was a master of laws during the regency of Jaehaerys Targaryen. His brief service at court placed him among the councillors confronting a crisis of royal authority: when Rogar Baratheon proposed removing the king, Prentys challenged him to say whether he meant to claim the Iron Throne himself. Later, Jaehaerys thanked Prentys for his service, reunited him with his wife, and sent him home.

Appointment and Place at Court

During the regency, conciliation guided the selection of the king’s councillors. Rather than exclude Maegor’s former servants and supporters, Jaehaerys and the Queen Regent sought to avoid deepening the realm’s divisions. Prentys, Lord of Riverrun, was summoned to court as master of laws, a position that placed him among the regency’s senior officials.

His wife, Lucinda Tully, accompanied him. Described as redoubtable and renowned for her piety, she was a notable presence in her own right. Prentys’s appointment and his wife’s arrival together connected the Tully lordship to the royal court during a period when the regents were trying to make government representative rather than simply reward one faction.

The Council Crisis

Prentys was present when Rogar, angered by the Queen Regent’s reluctance to oppose her son’s marriage, argued that Jaehaerys should be put aside. After Rogar denied that he meant to seize the throne for himself, Prentys asked whether he intended to claim it. The question brought the proposal’s central political danger into the open: removing the king could not be treated as a merely private disagreement within the ruling family, because it raised the issue of who would hold the crown instead.

The account places Prentys among the councillors who answered Rogar’s proposal with alarm and scrutiny. Lord Velaryon questioned his judgment, while the commander of the City Watch warned that his men would not support such a move. Prentys’s intervention was more pointedly constitutional: it pressed Rogar to make explicit the destination of a plan framed as being for the realm’s good. Rogar denied seeking the throne and proposed sending Jaehaerys to the Citadel instead.

Departure from the Regency

After Jaehaerys assumed personal rule, he reshaped the council. He retained some officials, replaced others, and thanked Prentys for his service. The king then reunited him with Lucinda and sent the couple back to Riverrun. Prentys’s departure marked the end of his recorded role in the royal administration; the account gives no further actions or later career for him.

Political Role

Prentys’s appearances are brief, but they trace a clear path from appointment to a moment of political testing and then withdrawal from court. His challenge to Rogar did not itself resolve the crisis, yet it made the consequences of the proposed deposition harder to evade. His service also belongs to the regency’s broader effort at conciliation: he held a place in the government during a fragile settlement, and was later released from that role when the king began governing in his own name.
